The Big Decision!

So we’ve done it! After 6 months of talking about how fantastic it would be to go on a trip around Australia, to leave the daily grind behind and get to know this great, great country of ours, we’ve made the decision to go for it.

We’ve had several trial runs, some more successful than others, and some absolutely disastrous, to make sure that we weren’t completely bonkers, and we’ll talk about those in future posts. Following those, and even now not without some significant trepidation, we’ve agreed on timing and location and now we just need to commit to making it happen.

We’ll be going from February 2019 to August 2019. Our leave has been agreed and the only barrier between us and the adventure is all of the organisation that needs to happen. Oh, and ourselves and our doubts! We’ll be moving from a four bedroom, two bathroom house, which currently houses the two of us and a dog (and many more family members over Christmas and the various holidays) into a one bedroom, half bathroom space that will house the wo of us and the dog. We’ll be moving from a 7 seater lounge, and two lounge chairs, and three bar stools, to two chairs. From an outdoor setting that seats 6 (and 15 with a little improvisation) to two camping chairs and a collapsible table. A king size main bedroom… well, you get the idea.

We’ve spent four years doing up our house to fit the latest trends. We’ve put in new carpet, floorboards (DIY), new landscaping (DIY), and a new garage. We’ve agreed to take a hiatus on house improvements, which means living with 30 year old bathrooms and no solar panels so that we can make this happen. Given we’re currently looking at rental options, and whether we can rent out fully furnished (and what do we do with our belongings?) or through AirBNB, or a housesitter, further work on the house seems trivial. Who knows what sort of occupants we’ll end up with and whether they’ll take care of the house?
